Like most cities situated in northern climes, Toronto has two seasons: hibernation and patio. And just as soon as warm spring sunshine hits the streets, sometimes as early as March, those outdoor patio chairs spring up at every restaurant, pub and cafe with any outdoor space they can call their own.
Unlike most northern cities, however, Toronto is blessed with a southern city limit that borders a lake (Lake Ontario)and a spectacular waterfront playpark. The reclaimed and revitalized shoreline filled with beaches and boardwalks, hiking and biking trails, marinas and restaurants, green parks and lakeside barbeques, public swimming pools and all day entertainment complexes runs for approximately 40 miles (60 km) from the Scarborough Bluffs in the east to the Marie Curtis Waterfront Park in the west. Urban dwellers are drawn to the water during the summer months for all of the above reasons but also because it is always at least 10 degrees cooler by the lake when the downtown city streets are baking in the often 30 degree Celsius/90 degree Fahrenheit temperatures. (Note: the easiest method of translating C to F is double the Celsius and add 30. i.e. 30C x2 +30 = 90F.) To beat the heat, the miles of waterfront are always bustling with strollers, picnickers, swimmers, cyclists, rollerbladers, readers, etc. You get the idea; it's popular with everyone.
