Opened in September 2000, the Toronto Areospace Museum (TAS ) offers special activities in coordination with the Toronto Aviation and Aircraft Show. The museum is located in the orginal de Haviland Canada aircraft factory, situated within the former Canadian Forces Base- Downsview.
The development of the TAS has been supported by a devoted group of volunteers who wanted to ensure the preservation of Toronto's aviation history. Many restoration projects are ongoing. A major project has been the restoration of the Lancaster Bomber, which was flown by thousands of Canadians during W.W.II and is seen as a symbol of sacrifice and freedom. In 1965 this aircraft was painted in camouflage and mounted on the waterfront across from the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. Corrosion and vandalism put it in danger of being lost and there are only a few left in the world. Now it has being rescued and is being restored to perfect condition. Another must see is the full-scale metal replica of the famous Avro Arrow, which was designed and built in Toronto.
Other attractions include historic and state-of-the art simulators, interactive displays and fascinating artifacts in addition to the ever-growing collection of military civilian and experimental aircraft. Group tours are available and there is a reference library for research purposes as well as a giftshop.
