Named for the late Canadian newspaper mogul, Baron Thomson of Fleet, Roy Thomson Hall is the city's world-class auditorium and home to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Mendelssohn Choir.
After opening in 1982, Roy Thomson Hall has accommodated some of the world's greatest performers (and most influential listeners). Queen Elizabeth has been in attendance, and the late great Leonard Bernstein once directed here. Countless performers have performed at Toronto's premiere hall, including Kiri Te Kanawa, Nigel Kennedy, Anne Murray Yo-Yo Ma and Jessye Norman. Even Tom Jones played here, amid a shower of thrown hotel keys and panties.
Built on a 2.5-acre site at King and Simcoe Streets, Roy Thomson Hall's 80-foot-high glass roof pierces the downtown sky, creating a magical 30,000-square-foot enclosure inside. What's more, the complex was designed with acoustics in mind at every stage of planning. Inside the oval hall, special disks on the ceiling can be lowered, raised and rotated to produce ideal conditions for any type of music, from pop concerts to powerful orchestral arrangements to gentle chamber arrangements.
It has hosted competitions and festivals as well as visiting orchestras (including the Vienna Philharmonic). It also accommodates business meetings, charity events and audio-visual presentations, for a capacity audience of 2,875.
And the hall's bold architecture spills onto the hall's elegant outdoor patio, which features a reflecting pool and an array of terraces designed by the Garden Club of Toronto. It's a calm place amid the hustle of the surrounding financial and commercial district.
Fans of classical music should definitely check out the well-stocked Roy Thomson Hall Music Store. It sells the finest in classical music CDs, cassettes and video tapes. The store also carries a selection of music-related gift items.
If you're shopping or strolling downtown, you can rest your feet and eat a picnic lunch on the landscaped public grounds adjacent to the hall.

More than just a music auditorium, Roy Thomson Hall is also the best venue for gala film presentations at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.
